SMS Payment

SMS Payment - what is it?

SMS Payment, which is also called Micro-Payment, enables the message sender to pay for a service or good at the moment he sends a text message. Thus, this kind of text messages is called a Premium SMS. Billing is either processed when a message is sent (mobile originated Premium SMS) or when it is received (mobile terminated Premium SMS). Pricing ranges from approximately 0.25 € to 5.00 € (up to 3.00 € in Luxembourg).

Payment confirmation is either inherent to incoming (MO) SMS or is transferred to the content/service provider by delivery receipts outgoing SMS (MT). Upon receiving payment confirmation, a service, content or information can be delivered or activated. Premium SMS are sent to and from Premium Short Codes. Those codes are four or five-digit numbers available on mobile networks that are invoiced at a higher rate than normal SMS messages (i.e. 64747 priced at 1.50 € in Luxembourg).

Mobile operators and mpulse both apply a revenue sharing model to Premium SMS messages, i.e. both retain a commission. The merchant receives 50% to 75% of the amount the user paid to the operator. At the end of a month, mpulse informs merchants (content/service providers) about amounts due in a charging advice. The merchant then sends an invoice to Mpulse and sums due are transferred into his bank account once mpulse receives payment from the operators.
